The Growth of The Chris Lewis Brand
It’s our birthday! Chris Lewis Fire and Security hits 25 years to the day since its inception. We take this opportunity to look back at the company’s history and the values that drive this Oxford-based company. It was founded with an objective that remains at the heart of the organisation 25 years on: to put customers first. It is this desire to listen, exceed expectations and provide systems tailored to customers needs than has seen the company go from strength to strength and become Oxford’s largest independent fire and security experts.
Chris Lewis Fire & Security (originally named Chris Lewis security services) was started by current CEO Chris Lewis in 1993. He saw that there were many companies out there installing security products but that often the service and technology advice they gave was far from inspiring. Chris Lewis wanted to set his business apart from the pack by providing innovation, bespoke design, installation and maintenance service to meet the specific needs of its clients, and to offer a level of service support superior to its competitors.
Making things easier for customers.
The desire to provide better service and latest technology was paramount and in order to deliver on this pledge the organisation looked carefully into what customer’s pain-points were and aimed to make service a better experience. Chris Lewis was seen as the go-to pioneering place that brought many of the original IP products to market.
A one stop shop.
One problem that came up time and time again was the need to have a different supplier for fire prevention and another for security. We are able to offer a wide range of both fire and security systems – meaning one consultant, one quote and one installation for all your needs. In 2008, we took this idea even further with the formation of our sister company Chris Lewis Smart Home – so that customers could be provided with an even greater range of products – all under one roof.
2016 saw a new direction for the brand with the unification of Fire & Security and Smart Home – under the umbrella of the Chris Lewis Group, this further strengthened our presence as the largest independent local provider of its type.

Relax this summer by guarding against theft and fire with these simple home security measures
Four out of five burglaries occur when a house is unoccupied; this makes a few weeks away for some summer sun the perfect opportunity for thieves.
The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to ensure your home is secure whilst you’re away. Follow these simple tips to protecting your home and its contents, then relax in the knowledge that your belongings are safe and secure.
1.Test your alarm
If you don’t set it very regularly, do a test run a few weeks before you’re due to leave, to allow time for an engineer’s visit if there is a problem. The last thing you want is to discover your security or fire alarm isn’t working just before you head off to the airport. And don’t forget to switch it on before you leave!
2. Check all your window and door locks are working properly
Burglars are clever and quick to spot an opportunity – an open window or faulty side door; everything should be locked up tight. Again check the locks and window fixtures a few weeks before you go so that you have time to repair any problems. Consider installing security sensors. These can alert you to any doors, windows, barns or garages left open so you can secure your property with ease.
You don’t want to come back from holiday to find that your alarm was faulty and didn’t activate when an intruder entered the property, or even that it kept your neighbours awake all night. Check your maintenance schedule and if necessary book a maintenance visit before you go. Regular maintenance and system upgrading is the best way to protect your home.
4. Key holders
If your alarm does go off when you’re away, an alarm receiving centre will contact you or another key holder. If you have entrusted a friend or neighbour with this responsibility make sure they’ll be around and their details are up to date so that they can be contacted if your alarm is activated.
5. Tell-tale signs
Leaflets poking out of the letterbox, bins left in the street, parcels on the doorstep – they are all signals to opportunistic burglars that you are away. Cancel deliveries and ask a trusted neighbour to move your post out of sight or bring in your bins. If you are away for longer, you could consider the Royal Mail Keepsafe service – they’ll keep your mail for up to two months while you’re gone.
6. Hold off on social media
Make sure that only people you know and trust are aware of your holiday plans. Announcing your holiday trips and posting snaps of you on the beach all over social media might seem like a great idea but that information could easily be shared with total strangers.
7. Move valuables
If you normally leave bicycles or power tools in your shed, consider putting them in the house while you are away, or buy a very sturdy lock. Don’t leave valuable items such as laptops or tablets on display and visible through downstairs windows. Move as much as you can into lockable cupboards, well away from view.
8. Fake it
Making your house look occupied is another good way to deter burglars. Buy a timer switch to turn lights on and off in the evenings, plug-in adapters can be used for table lamps and lighting adapters that fit between the light socket and the bulb for ceiling lights. You could also invite a neighbour to park on your drive while you are away as it will make it look like someone is home.
9. Spare keys
Burglars like to get into a property as quickly as possible – and the easiest way is with a key. If they suspect your property is unoccupied, they may look round for a spare key. If you have one hidden under a rock or flowerpot it would probably be a good idea to move it before you go away.
10. Get a smart alarm app
With a security system like the Chris Lewis Smart Home System you can control, view and receive notifications with an app for flexibility and convenience. This means that even if you’re on the beach you can keep an eye on your property. And if you get off the plane and remember you’ve forgotten to set your alarm – it only takes a quick tap on your app to resolve.

It has been an exciting few months for North Oxford Tennis Club as their Men’s team have climbed up the National Open Men’s league SW division to reach the top. As sponsors of the club, everyone at Chris Lewis has been keeping a close eye on their progress as they get closer to the final championship.
About the Club
Founded in 1900, North Oxford Tennis Club has been helping to hone the skills of budding tennis players for a very long time. It has even played a part in helping professional players, such as Tim Henman, achieve great things. The club is run by its members and is a wonderful place to practice, compete and socialise. It offers tennis lessons for anyone from four years old upwards as well as arranging social events and competitions.
Topping the league charts
North Oxford Tennis Club is currently at the top of the National Open Men’s league SW division and have secured a place in the National finals. This will take place in Bournemouth at the end of August and we can’t wait to see whether North Oxford will be the league champions – Good Luck!

Installing fire and security to a state-of-the art University asset
The Beecroft, located in the close to Oxford’s University parks, has been in construction for two years and the building is due to be complete within months. During the build, contractors, builders and the team at Chris Lewis Fire & Security have been working hard to make sure the site is ready for its grand opening. As the physics department’s first new building in 50 years, this project is hugely important to both the university and city. Chris Lewis Fire and Security are proud to be playing a part by designing a high-preforming fire and security system to match to this innovative new building.
As the project draws closer to completion, we can see how the building is already blending in to the Oxford landscape and will perfectly complement its surroundings as well as Oxford’s other architectural gems.
With five levels beneath ground level and five above, it is a complex and cutting-edge project. It has been designed to meet the demanding needs of the advanced scientific studies that will take place within the building.
The outstanding design has been produced by the architectural firm HawkinsBrown, these architects have worked hard to make the most of the space available, as well as considering its low environmental impact and low carbon footprint.
Costing a total of around £40m. The University is aiming for this building to help the world’s brightest minds develop their scientific research in the best possible environment.
Protecting this valuable asset
Chris Lewis Fire and Security have partnered many times with the University of Oxford in the past, having worked most recently on university buildings including The Blavatnik, St Antony’s College, The Andrew Wiles Building (new Maths institute) and the Weston library. We have been tasked with designing and installing fire and security protection solutions to safeguard the building and its assets. This system will include:
